Experience the colors of Mexico as you travel with Tom, Cree and Marcelo through one of Mexico’s most colorful regions. Oaxaca is one of the cultural hubs of Mexico with a rich history of art, food, tequila and the famous Day of the Dead celebrations. This travel photography workshop will include portraits with live models, a visit to a mescal farm and some of the best fine dining and food photography of Southern Mexico. The colors and tastes are vibrant and we will use creative photography techniques to capture it all.

Trip Highlights:

  • Portrait sessions with models in Day of the Dead makeup. Strobe lighting will be available for the group.
  • Visit to a mescal distillery with time to photograph workers and agave plants

  • Tour of archeological areas of Dainzu and Mitla
  • Tour of organic farm with cooking class by local chef

January 20 – Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico

Welcome to beautiful Oaxaca de Juarez. a picturesque and culturally rich city in the central valley of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Arrive and private transfer to your hotel. Welcome dinner at one of the best local restaurants in Oaxaca. we will stay at the Hotel La Noria Centro Historico for the remainder of the workshop to maximize our photography time.

January 21 – the Barrios

Photoshoot at two iconic neighborhoods in Oaxaca. Photograph quaint cafes, street murals with actors in historical costumes narrating local stories and legends of Mexico.

January 22 – the Mescal Route

We drive along the mescal route and visit a local distillery. Learn about the process of making mescal and visit the agave fields in private “barrel” trucks to photograph workers and rows of agave. Experience and photograph a local Chaman ritual.

January 23 – Day of the Dead Portraits

Private photo session in a colonial house with a central patio and a panoramic rooftop. Models will wear traditional attire. Dinner at a local fine restaurant.

January 24 – Local Village

We will head to the countryside to visit the village of Teotitlan del Valle, famous for its colorful weaving and fabrics. We’ll visit the house of local artist Pantaleon Ruiz where we will photograph the rug making process using colorful dyes. In the afternoon we visit the archeological area of Dainzu

January 25 – Food Photography

In the morning we visit a local market with a chef. Visit a local organic farm, with a photo session during a cooking demonstration.

January 26 – Visit City of the Dead

We visit the archeological area of Mitla, known as the City of the Dead. This pre-Hispanic temple features geometric designs that is replicated in local textiles and pottery. Dinner at one of the finest Oaxacan restaurants.

January 27 – Departure

Breakfast and transfer to the airport to fly home

Know Before You Go: This workshop is rated EASY and will have minimal walking required. Some walking to access archeological ruins will be required but will be less than one mile.
