This is Africa as you’ve always imagined it to be: the magic of a Serengeti sunset, the teeming wildlife of Ngorongoro Crater. A safari to Tanzania is a special adventure into the premier game-viewing country of Africa. Tanzania’s great game parks and reserves are unsurpassed anywhere in the world. We’ll see all of the major plains animals, zebras, giraffes, impalas, gazelles, and other herbivores. We have planned this safari during this period for a special reason — the Serengeti migration, the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. Details: Of all the wilderness areas in the US, Redwoods National Park may be the most awe-inspiring. It is home of the world’s largest and tallest trees. Walking through the redwoods in coastal California envelops the photographer in foggy, other-worldly terrain. The giant trees lumber toward the sky in a palette of chartreuse moss and deep red bark which contrast with the dark conifers. The Oregon coast is the second destination on our journey, a beachcomber’s paradise with layers of sea stacks. We chose the month of July for our workshop because it is the driest month of the summer. This offers the best chance to photograph beams of sunlight filtering through the fog.

Details: Western Colorado in the fall has one of the most vibrant displays of autumn color in the United States. Home to the densest groves of aspen trees in the country, brilliant gold and orange aspens saturate the valleys below the jagged snow-capped peaks of the San Juan Mountains. The air is cool, the elk are bugling in the forest, and the night skies are great for star photography.
We have been leading trips to this area for over a decade, and will take you to some of our favorite spots. We will photograph classic areas like Dallas Divide and Mt. Sneffels, explore the incredible groves along Last Dollar Road, and head up into the high country for beautiful orange aspens near Owl Creek Pass and Chimney Rock. Above Ouray we will photograph more stands of aspen and deserted gold mines. In addition to the grand landscapes, macro photography is excellent. We also plan to light paint and photograph the stars one night.

Details: Come join Tom and Cree on a classic road trip; Route 66. Steeped in history and Americana, Route 66 was one of America’s first highways stretching from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA. During the dustbowl of the 1930s thousands migrated west on Route 66 looking for jobs and a better life. In later years Route 66 was replaced by the interstate highway system, but many segments were preserved and are still drivable today. More recently many classic neon signs, diners and hotels have been restored, and we plan to photograph some of the best sights along Route 66.

Details: Every fall in Haines, Alaska bald eagles congregate along the Chilkat River. A fall salmon run attracts these magnificent birds, resulting in the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world. Their numbers are staggering. More than 3000 eagles arrive, and it is not uncommon to have 10 eagles lined up on one log with hundreds of birds in nearby trees. This is a bucket list trip for wildlife photographers. Imagine listening to the constant chattering of bald eagles while viewing multiple birds in your camera viewfinder feasting on salmon. Amazing!

Details: Bosque del Apache in New Mexico is one of the best places in the world to photograph sandhill cranes. The cranes fly into Bosque’s “Crane Ponds” each afternoon, sometimes silhouetted on a blood red sky. This is the perfect time to photograph the birds parachuting into the ponds…..they look like they are suspended in air. During the morning first light, the Bosque “blast off” provides the chance to shoot thousands of snow geese all taking off at once.
For the second part of the trip, we will travel to White Sands National Park to photograph stark yucca plants on dazzling white dunes of gypsum sand. The monument includes 265 miles of sand. There is plenty of space to roam looking for the perfect desert landscape.
